SUMMARY:Kirtan Training Level Two: Harmonium
DESCRIPTION:Want to learn how to lead kirtan? This course focuses on the spiritual practice of chanting while playing traditional instruments such as harmonium and kartals. The goal will be for each student to develop the ability and confidence to lead kirtan in a group\, or simply for oneself. \nNo previous musical experience is required for this course. The Kirtan Training course is not for learning music theory. Simple melodies are chosen for the Level One training so that everyone can participate. We focus on the roles of each instrument and learn how they cooperate and communicate in kirtan. Each class will also include a discussion on kirtan as the essential practice of Bhakti Yoga. \nPlease see registration information below. \n \nCourse Description\nOf all the instruments\, the most important is the voice. Finding one’s voice\, or developing it further in kirtan\, is a fulfilling experience of self discovery and expression. Our goal is to help each student exercise their voice and develop confidence singing in front of others. Kartals are the small hand cymbals which are important for the rhythm and timing in kirtan. Each student will learn how to properly hold and play kartals\, and will be provided kartals to practice at home between each class. And of course\, we will put special focus on the harmonium\, the instrument which assists the beautiful melodies and moods of kirtan. Students will learn simple but beautiful melodies on the harmonium and learn how to play with the accompaniment of kartals and the mrdanga drum. Students will also be invited to an online group where further instructions and videos will be available between classes. \nPrimary Instructor\nNitai’s journey into the world of kirtan began in 1997 when he discovered Bhakti Yoga for the first time. This discovery inspired him to fully immerse himself in Bhakti ashram life for 20 years. During that time\, he learned much about the expressions of kirtan in Bhakti\, and trained with traditional instruments such as harmonium\, kartals\, and mrdanga. Over those years\, Nitai spent time in Bhakti communities across Canada\, the U.S.A.\, and India. His immersion in Bhakti continues to this day through kirtan and daily practices. \nNitai is a director for Kirtan Vancouver\, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating immersive Kirtan experiences for people throughout the lower mainland. Nitai will be joined by other members of the Kirtan Vancouver team throughout the training. \nRegistration\nIf you are interested to register for this course\, please send an email to: hello@kirtanvancouver.com \nAfter your email is received\, we will send you a brief registration form to complete and send back to us. Please note that this class is limited to 10 students. Each student will be considered registered after completing the registration form and making the payment for the course. \nFor more information about Kirtan Vancouver\, please visit: www.kirtanvancouver.com

SUMMARY:When Things Fall Apart: Finding Peace With Fear
DESCRIPTION:November 27\, 2022: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (Pacific time) \nAttend in-person OR virtually. \nRequested Donation: $40.00 or more\, paid through the Vancouver Buddhist Centre website. \nPayment through the Vancouver Buddhist Centre website by November 23 registers you for attendance:  vancouverbuddhistcentre.com \n  \nWe credit a Vancouver TFO for suggesting the central theme for this day retreat\, using inspiration he received from Pema Chodron’s seminal book\, When Things Fall Apart. The primary question for the day: When have you turned toward pain\, discomfort\, fear\, confusion\, and what benefits resulted that would NOT have occurred had you turned away? We likely all have stories of this kind\, when we have\, yes\, heroically\, turned to face our discomfort to find resolution that is both deeper and enduring. Even so\, we can likely tell of times when we have turned away from pain to have it stay with us as an ongoing companion. \nPlease join us for talks by those Training For Ordination and Order Members followed by discussions and meditation. \nIt is by far more convenient to bring your own lunch\, but there are restaurants nearby. Service at one location forced a late afternoon start so please consider which option you’d prefer. \nYou may bring your own cushion and mat if you’d like but there are some at the facility as well.

SUMMARY:Art of Silence Retreat: In-Person Silent Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Times:\nTHU\, FRI: 6:00pm – 9:00pm\nSAT\, SUN: 7:00am – 9:00pm \nTeacher:\nhiteshini jugessur \nContact:\nM.K. Anand\, 7787517885\, mkanand@artofliving.ca \nMORE DETAILS AND REGISTRATION \nWhy take 3-4 days out of your busy life for a meditation retreat?\nThese few days make the rest of your year more alive\, productive and full of energy. When you emerge\, you feel recharged and refreshed\, ready to take on all your responsibilities with greater focus and joy. \n“Grateful to all the people and things which enable me to take time out like this to care for myself so that I can be the best\, most stress-free and happy version of myself possible … and in that be a better mamma. Truly blessed and most humbled. ” \n-Meggan\, megganmamma.com \n \nCreate Big Shifts in Your Life\nThe Silence Retreat can help you drop limiting beliefs\, regrets and worries\, and tap into a bigger vision for yourself. You come back to your life more grounded\, more centered\, more wise. You find a joy that is unshaken by outer circumstances. And the more often you do this retreat\, the more this strength and freedom builds inside of you. \nA Structured Retreat\nWhile other retreats could leave you a little to your own devices to find some silence amidst a quiet atmosphere\, many people find it challenging to know how to quiet their own minds. The Art of Silence Retreat provides optimal conditions for sinking deep within and breaking free from our mental chatter. Your whole day is carefully guided and crafted to give you as relaxing and transformative an experience possible. It’s no wonder that many course participants refer to it as the ideal vacation for body\, mind\, and spirit. \n“I have been to other silent retreats at places like Kripalu\, but basically\, we were just silent and did our own thing\, with optional classes we could attend throughout the day. But what we did here is so much more. What you guys offer is a full curriculum—the guided meditations\, the service\, the wisdom\, the music—all of this took me on a journey far deeper than I thought possible.” \nSilent Retreat participant\n“Meditation is the journey from movement to stillness\, sound to silence. “ \n-Sri Sri Ravi Shankar \nDeep Meditations\nA set of guided meditations called “Hollow and Empty” created by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar are a central part of the retreat. These meditations are geared towards drawing out the deepest layers of stress and tension from our nervous system. \nSilence\nSilence is more than not speaking\, it is a way to renew ourselves physically\, mentally\, and spiritually. Even just a few minutes of true silence gives a rest far deeper than sleep\, and possibly anything else you’ve experienced in life. \nMudras and Advanced Pranayama\nThe course builds upon the breathing exercises taught during the Happiness Program and teaches a series of Mudras – a subtle technique to balance the mind and emotions. \nMusic\nOften\, silence is associated with sadness. But in the retreat\, silence is a celebration. After a full day of yoga\, meditation and processes\, the evenings are spent celebrating the inner spirit through soulful music and sacred chants. \nMore Elements\n\n\n\nYoga- Unite the body and mind with a morning yoga session to start each day.\nVedic Wisdom-  Explore the “Four Pillars of Knowledge” from the ancient Vedic texts of India\, which gives us the tools to live with bliss in our lives.\nQuestion and Answer- Get clarity on meditation and peaceful living in nightly Q&A sessions with your teacher.\nWholesome Food- There’s nothing like eating well to soothe your spirit. Relish three delicious vegetarian meals a day.\n\n\n\nMORE DETAILS AND REGISTRATION
