When Things Fall Apart: Finding Peace With Fear

November 27, 2022: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (Pacific time)

Attend in-person OR virtually.

Requested Donation: $40.00 or more, paid through the Vancouver Buddhist Centre website.

Payment through the Vancouver Buddhist Centre website by November 23 registers you for attendance:  vancouverbuddhistcentre.com

We credit a Vancouver TFO for suggesting the central theme for this day retreat, using inspiration he received from Pema Chodron’s seminal book, When Things Fall Apart. The primary question for the day: When have you turned toward pain, discomfort, fear, confusion, and what benefits resulted that would NOT have occurred had you turned away? We likely all have stories of this kind, when we have, yes, heroically, turned to face our discomfort to find resolution that is both deeper and enduring. Even so, we can likely tell of times when we have turned away from pain to have it stay with us as an ongoing companion.

Please join us for talks by those Training For Ordination and Order Members followed by discussions and meditation.

It is by far more convenient to bring your own lunch, but there are restaurants nearby. Service at one location forced a late afternoon start so please consider which option you’d prefer.

You may bring your own cushion and mat if you’d like but there are some at the facility as well.

Breathwave with Christina Niven

Breathwave conscious connected breathing is a gentle form of breathwork that supports nervous system regulation, emotional integration and inner connection. It honours the sacred within each one of us … the beauty, the light, the magnificent while also holding and integrating the shadow, the broken, the exiled in order to come to wholeness. The breath invites you into presence and to remember who you truly are in the essence of your Being.

Group Breathwave sessions are facilitated by senior Breathwave facilitator and trainer Christina Niven.

In a group journey, Christina will gently guide you into the breathwave, offer hands-on facilitation (with consent) and support you in staying present with and in your experience. Breathing is done in a relaxed way while lying down with the accompaniment of music and presence.

DESCRIPTION

Meditation helps us to become more at ease in our own being. As we come to know ourselves in this authentic way, our eyes open to how deeply interconnected we are to all of life. To harm another is to harm ourselves. As long as others are suffering, we too suffer. Broadening our view leads to a qualitative difference in how we live our lives, knowing how deeply entwined we are. During this meditation weekend, we will experience the truth of interconnectedness through awareness and compassion practice, teachings, and discussion, so that we may live from this place of a wise and compassionate heart.

As well, we will explore how meditation can help us understand our interdependence.

This retreat is suitable for all meditators and a great support for those who have done any of the Path of Liberation or Joy of Living courses.

Cancellation Policy: Attendees will receive full refunds up to September 23; after that we will retain the admin fee of $25.

Why take 3-4 days out of your busy life for a meditation retreat?

These few days make the rest of your year more alive, productive and full of energy. When you emerge, you feel recharged and refreshed, ready to take on all your responsibilities with greater focus and joy.

Grateful to all the people and things which enable me to take time out like this to care for myself so that I can be the best, most stress-free and happy version of myself possible … and in that be a better mamma. Truly blessed and most humbled.

Create Big Shifts in Your Life

The Silence Retreat can help you drop limiting beliefs, regrets and worries, and tap into a bigger vision for yourself. You come back to your life more grounded, more centered, more wise. You find a joy that is unshaken by outer circumstances. And the more often you do this retreat, the more this strength and freedom builds inside of you.

A Structured Retreat

While other retreats could leave you a little to your own devices to find some silence amidst a quiet atmosphere, many people find it challenging to know how to quiet their own minds. The Art of Silence Retreat provides optimal conditions for sinking deep within and breaking free from our mental chatter. Your whole day is carefully guided and crafted to give you as relaxing and transformative an experience possible. It’s no wonder that many course participants refer to it as the ideal vacation for body, mind, and spirit.

“I have been to other silent retreats at places like Kripalu, but basically, we were just silent and did our own thing, with optional classes we could attend throughout the day. But what we did here is so much more. What you guys offer is a full curriculum—the guided meditations, the service, the wisdom, the music—all of this took me on a journey far deeper than I thought possible.”

Silent Retreat participant

“Meditation is the journey from movement to stillness, sound to silence. “

-Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Deep Meditations

A set of guided meditations called “Hollow and Empty” created by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar are a central part of the retreat. These meditations are geared towards drawing out the deepest layers of stress and tension from our nervous system.

Silence

Silence is more than not speaking, it is a way to renew ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually. Even just a few minutes of true silence gives a rest far deeper than sleep, and possibly anything else you’ve experienced in life.

Mudras and Advanced Pranayama

The course builds upon the breathing exercises taught during the Happiness Program and teaches a series of Mudras – a subtle technique to balance the mind and emotions.

Music

Often, silence is associated with sadness. But in the retreat, silence is a celebration. After a full day of yoga, meditation and processes, the evenings are spent celebrating the inner spirit through soulful music and sacred chants.
